Location: The Trinity College Clock building in Cambridge
Project description
The College clock, housed within the iconic King Edward’s Gate—more commonly known as the clock tower—is situated in one of Trinity’s oldest structures. Trinity College stands out in Cambridge with its distinctive architecture, notably featuring the Great Court, acclaimed as the largest enclosed courtyard in Europe.
Engaging the expertise of Red Laser, a laser scanner survey was commissioned to meticulously document the students’ accommodation within this historic edifice, producing architectural CAD drawings at a scale of 1:50. The location, situated in the heart of Cambridge’s historical centre, presented unique challenges as it is a highly touristic and bustling area. In response, we opted for the Faro scanner, chosen for its compact size, enabling our surveyors to seamlessly scan amidst the vibrant streets frequented by large groups of tourists.
The data collected through the laser scanner survey, including the point cloud generated, undergoes rigorous processing in CAD. This step is crucial in crafting detailed drawings of the external elevations, ensuring precise documentation of the historical facades. Additionally, the survey facilitates the creation of floor plans, which play a pivotal role in the redesign of the internal layout of this revered structure.
By navigating the intricacies of this historical site with cutting-edge technology, we not only capture the essence of Trinity’s architectural heritage but also contribute to the thoughtful preservation and modernization of its internal spaces.
