Location: Royal Free Hospital Concrete Scanning Survey
Project Overview
Red Laser was appointed to carry out a concrete scanning survey at Royal Free Hospital ahead of planned drilling and cutting works within a roof slab area and associated structural columns.
The project required accurate information on reinforcement locations and structural construction details before intrusive works could proceed. Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Ferroscan technology, Red Laser provided reliable data to support design decisions, minimise risk and enable safe execution of the proposed works.
Smart surveying. Informed decisions.
Project Requirements
The survey was commissioned to support the following objectives:
The information gathered would be used to assess proposed intrusive works and reduce the risk of damaging embedded structural elements.

Equipment & Method
To achieve complete coverage of the survey area, Red Laser used a combination of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Ferroscan technology.
Proceq GP8000 Ground Penetrating Radar
The Proceq GP8000 system was used to detect reinforcement patterns and investigate slab construction details.
Hilti PS 300 Ferroscan
The Hilti PS 300 Ferroscan system was used to assess reinforcement depth, spacing and layout, providing additional verification of reinforcement locations within the structure.
Survey areas were agreed on site with the client representative before scanning commenced. A structured grid pattern at approximately 300mm centres was used across the roof slab area, with longitudinal and transverse scanning passes undertaken to achieve comprehensive coverage.
The roof slab and nine structural columns were scanned from accessible locations, with reinforcement positions marked directly onto the structure during the survey. All collected data was subsequently processed and integrated into CAD deliverables.
Survey Findings
The survey successfully identified reinforcement throughout the roof slab area and all nine structural columns.
Analysis of the survey data confirmed slab construction details, reinforcement layouts and typical reinforcement depths across the surveyed areas. Beam main bars and link bar arrangements were also identified and mapped.
All detected reinforcement was marked on site, providing the project team with a clear record of reinforcement locations before drilling and cutting works commenced.
Deliverables
Following completion of the survey, the client received:
Outcome
The concrete scanning survey provided the project team with reliable information on reinforcement locations and structural construction before intrusive works commenced.
By identifying reinforcement layouts, beam arrangements and reinforcement depths, the survey findings enabled safer planning of drilling and cutting activities and provided a clear understanding of the structure before works began.
Reliable data. Reduced risk.
